Twin Swamps Nature Preserve

Location: From Mount Vernon (17 miles west of Evansville on SR 62) take SR 69 south, through a sharp right turn at the Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area, then 1 and a third miles to where the road curves left; go straight instead of curving to the stop sign at CR 300W; turn right immediately and go about .8 mile to the preserve. Parking is on the left.

Bald Cypress "Knees"

Description: 600 acres of cypress swamp and overcup oak swamp; there are boardwalks and foot trails through the area. A little bit of the Old South in the Hoosier State. Worth a visit; good for birds, though there aren't really any open spaces; you have to find them in the brush or the trees. There's a great website maintained for this preserve at http://www.usi.edu/science/biology/TwinSwamps/Wildflowers_of_Twin_Swamps.htm : check it out!
