Location: From Terre Haute, 17 miles south on US 41, then east 9 miles on SR 48. The Park Entrance is on the right shortly after the intersection with SR 159.

Description: Not Visited. This park is mostly lake, although there are four hiking trails. This used to be a strip mine, reclaimed during the 30's, so at least stop by to pay your respects and remember that the Earth can recover (with or without our help, of course, but why not do what we can?). A 10.5 mile road around the lake is supposed to be good for biking. There is a "Friends of Shakamak State Park" home page that is worth looking at; Click here! By the way, one of their members insists that it was never a strip mine, and that the lakes were dug intentionally as lakes; I'll have to check this out.

Nearby Points of Interest: Fowler Park Wilderness Area, Minnehaha F&W, Greene-Sullivan State Forest. I insist that you stop in Terre Haute and visit the Eugene V. Debs Home, if only to rub Indiana's nose in the fact that the nation's best known Socialist lived here.
