Hitz-Rhodehamel Woods

Location: Definitely in southern Indiana, because after taking SR 46 into the town of Nashville and continuing out the other side on SR 135, you turn right after four miles onto "Greasy Creek Road". But don't worry, you immediately turn left onto Freeman Ridge Road (which looks scary on the map), which you follow to the "T" intersection; here, turn left again and go about a quarter mile; the preserve is on the right for the next quarter mile.

Description: Not Visited. Ridges, ravines and the rare whorled pogonia. Love that name. 263 acres of southern Indiana woodland is probably going to be a treat, so don't let the Greasy Creek Road scare you off. There are established trails.

Nearby Points of Interest: Brown County State Park, Yellowwood State Forest, Hoosier National Forest, Whip-poor-will Woods and Camp Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area. Bloomington is a fairly nice town.

Cautions: Don't try this trip on a "Fall Foliage" weekend.

Ownership: The Nature Conservancy.
