Cline Lake Fen

Location: From I-69 and US 20, take 20 west to the town of Plato, then turn right on CR 500E and right again on CR 25N; the preserve is on the right side about half a mile along.

Description: Not Visited. Many threatened plants here in the fen, which is different in some way from a marsh, swamp or bog. A rare frog and a rare turtle and the smooth gooseberry!

Nearby Points of Interest: Olin Lake Nature Preserve, Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area, Pokagon State Park

Cautions: Okay, I'll tell you the difference (yes, I do know). Fens are wet because of underground seeps or springs, and have alkaline water. Marshes have standing fresh water with small plants and shrubby growth, swamps are the same but with trees and bogs are water filled in with decaying plants and are acidic. In other words, fens aren't as slimy.
