Cedar Bluffs

Location: From Bloomington or SR 37, take Walnut St. (business 37 in town, "old" St. Rd. 37 after you cross current St. Rd. 37) south 8.5 miles to Cedar Bluff Road, then turn right and go to the "T" intersection and turn left on Ketcham Road. Drive just under half a mile (if you cross a creek at this point, you've gone a bit too far) and park in a small turnoff (room for one car) on the right side of the road. The trail to the preserve is discernible on the left side of the road if you look carefully. Don't go right next to the creek and enter on the old railroad grade, even though it looks like the most obvious thing to do.

Description: 23 acres, limestone bluff over Clear Creek with cedar trees on it, making the name of the preserve remarkably apropos. The valley at the east end of the bluff is great for spring wildflowers. Slabs fallen from the bluff frequently contain small fossil impressions; the whole formation is of geological interest. The creek is a nice wading stream, clear and with a few riffles. The trail is not maintained as far as I can tell, except for people walking on it; it can be difficult to follow. Very rocky in places, so watch your step. A very nice, fairly quiet and very interesting property.

Nearby Points of Interest: Brown County State Park; Hoosier National Forest; Morgan-Monroe State Forest

Cautions: It is said that in icy conditions one should take Ketcham Road all the way from Walnut.
