Spicer Lake

Location: From South Bend, take US 20 west 14 miles to County Line Road, just past New Carlisle. Turn right and go just under four miles to the parking lot, on the right side of the road.

Description: Not Visited. When the glaciers left Indiana, they left parts of themselves behind--huge blocks of ice that got embedded in the ground and melted themselves into lakes. Spicer Lake is one of these "pothole" lakes (there are tons of these in North Dakota, also). Most of the lake has gradually filled in with a peat layers, on which vegetation starts to grow; some trees are actually growing on mats of other plants floating in the water. This sounds worth a visit.

Nearby Points of Interest: Potato Creek State Park.

Cautions: Swampy in some areas.

Ownership: St. Joseph County Department of Parks and Recreation.
