NIPSCO Savanna

Location: From SR 49junction with SR 10, go north on 49 for three miles; then east on CR 1500 N half a mile, to a parking area on the south side of the road; preserve is on the north.

Description: A big preserve at 700+ acres. The open field across from the parking area is simply old abandoned farmland; hopefully some restoration work will be done here. The woods to the east is where work is being done at the moment, mostly controlled burns. The oak savanna is interesting and worth checking out; lots of slightly rolling dunes.

Nearby Points of Interest: Tefft Savanna, Stoutsburg Savanna, Jasper Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area

Cautions: Bring the repellent. Also, there is a lot of ragweed in the abandoned field. A large part of the preserved to the east of the woods is being separately managed and is not open to the public.

Ownership: TNC and NIPSCO (Northern Indiana Public Service Company)
