Sandhills (Stoutsburg) Savanna

The author in a sea of grass

Location: From I-65 take SR 10 about 7 miles east to CR 350W; turn south and go one mile to CR 1100N; turn east again; the preserve starts in half a mile, and continues for another three quarters of a mile. There are on or two pull-offs; my favorite is an old farm road about half-way along that opens into a prairie remnant.

Description: My favorite savanna because of the above-mentioned prairie remnant, a big open place with a single tree in it, and grasses way taller than you are (in late summer or autumn, anyway--only waist-high in summer. Lots of wildflowers and native grasses here, including rattlesnake master (sounds like a video-game hero). If you follow the farm road back through the brush at the end, you'll find another farm road path perpindicular to the first; follow it to the left and you'll climb up a sand-dune ridge and into a more oak-savanna landscape. A beautiful place for a walk, I've never seen anyone else there, and it is the least mosquito-ridden savanna I've visited.
