Orangeville Rise of Lost River (not)

Location: South of Bloomington on SR 37 through Orleans for another two and a half miles to CR 500N; turn right on 500 and go to Orangeville (you'll have to turn left on CR 500W). Park in the pulloff on the south side of Orangeville.

Description: A little (3 acres) place. However, this is not where Lost River, which flows underground through this area, comes back to the surface. That is about a half-mile south of here, and on private property. This is a rise from another drainage, but was originally thought to be part of the Lost River.  Lost River is at the center of southern Indiana cave country, and actually flows more than one cave. If you are caving in the area, or are a geology student, this might be worth a visit. It is, after all, a National Natural Landmark. However, there is not much more here than an old plaque partially obscured in the undergrowth and a big pool of water next to a cliff. No trail is maintained, just a couple of short eroded-out places trodden in by the curious. A mildly interesting side trip if you have some time and are passing by.

Nearby Points of Interest: Wesley Chapel Gulf. While you're in the area, drive through French Lick (which is not what it sounds like) and gawk at the French Lick Resort Hotel and the nearby West Baden domed building that was also once a resort. There are mineral springs here that once watered wealthy gangsters from Chicago. Take a taste of the Pluto water, it's uniquely awful. You're right next to the Hoosier National Forest, too, of course.

Cautions: No cave diving.

Ownership: The Nature Conservancy.
