Fern Cliff Nature Preserve

Location: From Lafayette take Hwy. 231 south to Greencastle. Turn west (right) on Walnut Street and go 4 miles (pay attention, now). You’ll cross Little Walnut Creek and turn left onto a winding road that is theoretically CR500W and that follows Big Walnut Creek and goes underneath a railroad bridge. At each of the next three intersections keep to or turn to the left (while the road keeps changing numbers, on the maps anyway, to 525W and 550W); you’ll cross another creek (Snake Creek) and turn immediately to the right on what may be marked as CR375S. Go one mile and you’re in the vicinity of the entrance. It will be on your right, unless you go too far and have to turn around, in which case it will be on your left. The entrance is not obvious. You can squeeze two cars into the "parking" space, three in a pinch.

Description: The path back from the parking area leads you to the top of a cliff, or series of cliffs. The cliffs sort of to your right are the ones which gave the area its name. Climb down--it’s like a jungle, ferns hanging everywhere on the cliff walls. The area isn’t huge, and there’s not a lot of hiking, although the climbs are steep, but it’s worth it to get that tropical feeling.

Nearby Points of Interest: Cataract Falls.

Cautions: The climbs, as noted, are quite steep in places. Take the usual precautions for peering over the edges of cliffs. A bit swampy at the bottom, so figure on mosquitoes during the summer. Those beige papery round things on the ground are wasps’ nests; don’t step on them.
