The UU Social Justice Committee was founded in the belief that all members of a society should have basic human rights and equal access to their community's wealth and resources.  To this end, the group works on public advocacy issues and on local social responsibility initiatives.  The Social Justice Committee supports existing organizations through education, volunteer and financial contributions, and community activism.  The Social Justice Committee is composed of the former Social Action and Social Responsibility Committees.  Activities include the following:

• Change for Change - identifies social services agencies involved in family advocacy and child abuse prevention and collects funds to support their programs; information the congregation of volunteer opportunities at the agencies.

• Reading Teams (to underprivileged youth)

• "Plant Justice, Harvest Peace" Social Justice Conference

• ACLU/UU community discussions

• Homeward Bound Walk

• Community Responsibility Subcommittee year-round support for:

  • Cary Home

  • Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM)

    • Jubilee

    • Homeless shelter dinners

    • Representative on LUM's board

  • YWCA DVIPP Program (Women's Shelter)

  • St. John's Food Pantry

  • Emergency supply cupboard

  • Goodwill clothing drive (vouchers for LUM, Cary Home, DVIPP)

• Indiana Religious Coalition on Reproductive Choice affiliate member

• Indiana Equality supporter

• UU Forum and Sunday church service participation

• Education of congregation on UU Study/Action issues - one topic is "Peacemaking".
