Melvin A. Young Jr.

Melvin A. Young Jr., 78, formerly of 219 N. Prairie St., Brookston, died Friday, Aug. 18, at 7:40 p.m. at Heritage Healthcare, West Lafayette. He had been a resident of Heritage Healthcare since January.

He was born Jan. 23, 1917, to Melvin and Mary Young Sr., in Flint, Mich. He was married Oct. 1, 1983, to Jean Bever Silverthorn, in West Point. She survives.

Since 1981 he had lived in Brookston and had also lived at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette.

He graduated from Central High School in Flint, Mich., in 1935. He attended Butler University for two years and also attended several trade schools.

He was a retired truck driver. He was a pilot in the Army AirCorps during WW II. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 777.

Surviving with his wife are two sons; James of Flint, Mich. and Melvin of Millington, Mich; two daughters, Mrs Matt (Ruth) Cassiday, Grand Blanc, Mich and Tressa Steiner, Flint, Mich.; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A son, Robert, a brother and sister are deceased.

The funeral was Monday, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Cleo Ewing officiating.

Burial was in Green Bay Cemetery, Newtown.
