Robert W. "Poppi" White

Robert W. "Poppi" White, 71, of Monticello died Saturday, December 17, 2005 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.

He was born at Lafayette on June 28, 1934 to William Marling and Mildred Grace Hill White.

He married Ruby E. Johnson on November 18, 1952 at the United Methodist Church in Rensselaer. She survives.

Bob had lived in the Monticello area most of his life and was a graduate of Monticello High School.

He was a co-owner of the old Aufenberg-White Funeral Home in Monticello and also was a funeral director at the Harrison Funeral Home in Royal Center, Jackson Funeral Home in Rensselaer and Miller Funeral Home in Monticello.

He was a real estate agent for Washburn Realty and sold automobiles for Jim Dobson Ford, both in Monticello. He also sold veterinarian supplies for 27 years.

He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

He was a member of the Monticello Christian Church and was a member of the Monticello Fire Department for 30 years.

He was the chairman of Crime Stoppers and helped get the Toys from the Heart restarted in the Monticello Fire Department.

He was the first president of the Monticello Fire and Rescue Association and had served as the president of the White County Foster Children.

He was named the Herald Journal Volunteer of the Year in 1991.

Other survivors include daughter Maria (Val) Watkins, Philadelphia, Penn; son Robert M. "Butch/Budah" (fiancee Kathryn M. Jones), Wolcott; daughter Susan E. (Dale) Williams, Portland; son James J. (Becky) White; Monon; daughter Marcia J. Allen, Monticello; a sister, Jan (Robert D.) Carter, Monticello and numerous foster children; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were today at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Dodson officiating.

Burial was in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Monticello.
