Richard M. "Dick" Wheeler, 75 of Wolcott died suddenly on Saturday, January 2, 1999 at White County Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 2, 1923 in Montezuma, IN. the son of Leonard and Sarah Machin Wheeler. He had lived in Wolcott since 1955.
He married Darline Fry in 1949 and she survives along with two daughters, Beth Folsom of Marcos, Colorado and Lisa Bettis of Bloomington, IL and two sons, Fred Wheeler of Plano, TX and Eric Wheeler of Lafayette, IN. He had 6 grandchildren.
He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1941 and Ball State University in 1948 He was a retired school teacher and editor/publisher of the New Wolcott Enterprise. He taught school in Rockport, Montezuma, Wolcott and Tri-County.
He served on the State Student Assistance Commission, Indiana State Historical Society, White County Historical Society, and White County Retired Teachers.
Gov. Orr awarded him a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1986.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Wolcott United Methodist Church where he was a Lay Leader. He served on the Summer Festival Committee. And was a past master of the Wolcott Lodge 180 F&AM: Wolcott Chapter 171 OES; Scottish Rite; Wolcott American Legion Post 294; was president ol Anson Wolcott Historical Society and Wolcott Lions Club.
Friends may call at the Foster Funeral Home from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 8, 1999 in the Wolcott United Methodist Church with Rev Jason Gross and Rev. Mark O'Brein officiating. The body will lie in state at the church for 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Wolcott Cemetery.
