Lawrence W. "Cobb" Vogel, 78, Monticello, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at his residence.
He was born May 7, 1923, to Charles and Mary Pelfrense Vogel, in Reynolds. He was married Oct. 26, 1946, to Alberta T. Graves, in Kokomo and she survives.
He lived in the Monticello area his entire life and graduated from the "University of Reynolds" and attended Fort Wayne Business College.
He owned Vogel Real Estate in Monticello for over 30 years. He was an auctioneer for 50 years and served various Scout and community events. He handled farm real estate and household auctions. Two of his sons now continue the real estate and auctioneer businesses.
He was a member of the White County Board of Realtors and was past president and member of the National and State Auctioneers . He was a commissioner for eight years on the Indiana State Board of Auctioneers.
He served two terms on the White County Council.
He was a member of the Monticello Rotary Club and was instrumental in many fund-raising projects of the club. He was named Rotarian of the Year in 1996. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was past Grand Knight for four years. He was also involved in the Knights of Columbus 4thDegree.
He served as a board member of Wabash Valley Hospital in Lafayette for two terms. He also served as a board member for the Greater Monticello Chamber of Commerce and was a co-partner in the financing of the new Chamber of Commerce building.
He served many years on White County United Way drives as an auctioneer and fund-raiser. He was a member of the Elks Club in Logansport and Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, where he served as minister and collection counter for a period of 15 years.
He received several awards including: the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Gov. Bob Orr in 1982; the National Auctioneers Hall of Fame Award in 1992; and the George Armstrong Spencer Award from the Greater Monticello Chamber of Commerce in 1997.
He played the organ at two Monticello nursing homes for nine years. He enjoyed golfing with friends and playing bridge and euchre.
Surviving with his wife are four sons, Gregory D. (Tammy), Bruce W. (Carolyn), Phillip L. (Susan) and Chris A. (Vicki), all of Monticello; two sisters, Loretta Bossung, of Reynolds and Marie Burns, Monticello; 10 grandchildren and a great grandchild. Three brothers are deceased.
A Knights of Columbus service was held Wedneaaay, at 9 a.m. at the Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello. Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with the Revs. James Goodrum and Donald Hardebeck officiating.
Burial was in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Emmaus Mission in Logansport or the Gibault House in Terre Haute.
