Chester Harold VanScoyk, 80, of Hammond died Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at his home.
He was born March 6, 1923 in Pulaski County, the son of Leo and Leona Hahn VanScoyk. He married Helen Liming. She survives.
He moved from the Pulaski County area to Calumet City, 50 years ago. He was a custodian of Hammond Public Schools for 17 years, retiring in 1989. He also had been a bus driver for Shoreline Bus Co., in Hammond.
He served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, serving in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the EMAE Medal, four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct and Victory Medals.
He was a member of Allied Post 369 American Legion in East Chicago, VFW Post 802 in Hammond and F&AM Lodge 422 in Lansing, Ill.
Other survivors include one son Kendall (Lori) VanScoyk of Merrillville; two daughters, Donella (Thomas) Huber of St. John, In., and Dawn (Tony) Berg of Hammond; three sisters, Ellen (Gene) Boose of Plymouth, Ardis Caporelatti of Santa Clara, Calif., and Mildred Watters of Ft. Wayne and sister-in-law Francis [sic] VanScoyk of Monticello. He had 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Two brothers Oris and Edward VanScoyk are deceased.
Funeral services were Saturday at the Hessville Assembly of God Church. Bocken Funeral Home of Hammond was in charge of arrangements.
Graveside services were held at the Buffalo Cemetery on Sunday.
