Byron M. "Max" Vanderbilt

Byron M. "Max" Vanderbilt, 79, a resident of the Indiana Veterans Home, formerly of Brookston, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at the home. He had been a resident there since June of 2003.

He was born December 28, 1925 in Lafayette and was a 1943 graduate of Brookston High School.

He was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army who received the Purple Heart after being wounded in France.

His marriage was to Shirley L. Danford on May 8, 1949 in Logansport. She survives.

He retired after 28 years from the United States Post Office in 1986. He had previously worked 11 years on the Monon Railroad.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Masonic Lodge, Moose Lodge of Monticello and Old Rails.

He enjoyed golf and bowling.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Kevin (Billie) Vanderbilt of West Lafayette and Karen Lanie of Wolcott; two granddaughters, Shannon (David) Hildebrandt of British Columbia and Anna Lanie of Wolcott.

Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

No services are planned at this time. His interment will be in Brookston I.O.O.F Cemetery. Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home is entrusted with his care.
