Arthur William Shumard, 93, of West Lafayette, died Monday, October 17, 2005 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.

He was born at Effingham, Ill. on October 31, 1911 to William and Carrie (Renfro) Shumard.

He married Mary Ellen Johnson at St. Charles, MO on January 25, 1940. She died May 13, 2002.

Survivors include sons Arthur E. "Gene" (Diane) Shumard, Battle Ground, Russell Shumard, Lafayette, Robert Shumard, West Lafayette, Roger (Helen) Shumard, Brookston; daughters, Carolyn Sue Shumard, West Lafayette, Jane (Jerry) Slipher, Battle Ground, Luann (William) Vaughn and Mary C. "Cathy" Madary, both of Lafayette; brothers, Troy Shumard, Decatur, Ill., Guy Shumard, Bement, Ill., and Billy Shumard, Clinton, Ill.; sisters, Opal Scott, Bement, Ill. and Violet Humes, St. Joe, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Four brothers, two sisters and two grandsons are deceased.

Funeral services were at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home in Brookston on Friday with Pastor Brian White officiating. Burial was in Battle Ground Cemetery.
