John Fredrick [sic] Salomon, 63, of Monticello died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at his residence.
He was born June 24, 1941 in White County, the son of John Fredrick and Sadie Lizzy (Sims) Salomon, Sr.
His marriage was to Donna J. Rogers on August 28, 1965 at the Guernsey Church of the Brethren. She survives.
John lived in Monticello all of his life and was a 1959 graduate of Monticello High School. He was also a graduate of Fort Wayne International Business College.
John served in the Indiana National Guard and was also the soldier of the year in 1964 while serving in the guard. He also scored a perfect score shooting a Ml6 in 1963.
He had worked at the Heiny Insurance Agency in Monticello from 1967 until his retirement on February 1, 2003. He had worked all the way from an insurance agent to the owner.
He was "The Voice of Twin Lakes" on WVTL, WWET, and WNJY for many years and enjoyed broadcasting state finals for softball, basketball and volleyball. He enjoyed announcing for all of the different schools in the area and following athletes at the Indiana All Stars (Girls & Boys). John was the sportscaster of the year for AP/UPI (Associated Press/United Press International) and also for the I.H.S.A.A.
He loved anything and everything that dealt with kids, athletics and academics. He enjoyed keeping stats for many sport activities for Twin Lakes up to this season.
He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash, George Spencer Armstrong Award associated with the Greater Monticello Chamber of Commerce and the Crystal Apple Award from the Twin Lakes School Corporation. He was the only person outside the school corporation to ever receive this award.
He also announced for the White County Horse and Pony Club and Indiana Pinto Horse Association for several years.
He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church and had served on numerous boards within the church and was instrumental in getting the outdoor drive-in-theater started. He was also a member of the Monticello Rotary Club, the board of Camp Tecumseh for over 23 years, and had served as chairman of the board. He was also on the board for White County Council on Aging.
He was also elected to the Monticello City Council in 1972, serving one term and was Chairman of the White County Election Board for over 20 years. He was also a precinct chairman for the White County GOP from 1980 until his death.
John was the chairman of the Don Lehe campaign.
He enjoyed Purdue sports and was a member of the John Purdue Club. He enjoyed helping support the White County F.O.P. and organ and tissue donation was very important to him as well.
John enjoyed camping even if it was in his own backyard. He very much loved his family and especially his grandchildren.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Pamela C. Salomon-Andrews of Monticello and Kathryn (Kevin) O'Farrell of Delphi, grandsons Nolan and Nathan O'Farrell of Delphi; two brothers, Lyle E. (Myrtle) Salomon, of Monticello and Myrele E. Salomon of Elk Grove Village, lllinois; and a God Son [sic] Brandon Schuppe of Berwyn, Illinois.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, January 28 at Skaggs Gym at Roosevelt Middle School in Monticello. Miller-Roscka Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 29 at Skaggs Gym with Rev. Wm. Brookshire officiating.
Burial will be in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Monticello.
