Opal M. Qualkenbush

Opal M. Qualkenbush, 98, a former Monon resident, died Sunday, Sept. 30, at 9:30 a.m. in Greenwood Village South, Greenwood. She had been ill for two months.

She was born Aug. 7, 1903, near Buffalo, to Alfred and Jane Shell Hughes. She was married Aug. 15, 1921, to Raymond L. Qualkenbush, in Monon. He died in 1967.

She moved in 1997 to Greenwood, after living in the Monon community for most of her life.

She was a member of Monon United Methodist Church.

She was active in the Monon community and worked in restaurants, grocery stores, as a receptionist in the dental office and at the hardware store. From 1945-48, she owned and operated the former South Side Cafe, which was open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to accommodate railroaders and travelers.

She was well known in the community for her knitting, crocheting and candy-making creations.

She was a member of the Monon Current Literature Club and was a past member of Eastern Star.

Survivors iclude [sic] a son, M.L. "Gabby" Qualkenbush of Sun City Center, Florida; a daughter, Ilene Q. Younger, of Greenwood; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

A son, Lewis J. Qualkenbush, who died in 1985, five brothers and a sister are deceased.

Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday. at Kellogg Funeral Home, Monon. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Monon United Methodist Church with Pastor Matthew Pickut officiating.

Burial will be in Bedford Cemetery, Monon.
