Lester Leroy "Les" Pollock, 66, who lived on Lake Shafer, died Sunday, April 4, in White County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 23, 1932, to Vern and Emma Vaughn Pollock, in Valparaiso.
he won the Soap Box Derby in Valparaiso in 1947. He was a 1952 graduate of Valparaiso High School. He attended Junior College at New Mexico Western and Pueblo Junior College at Pueblo, Colo. At Pueblo Junior College, he was a Junior College All-American choice. He was a basketball player and captain from 1960-62 for North Texas State in Denton, Texas.
In 1962, he was given a fellowship at North Texas State to coach and work on his master's degree. In 1964, he received his second degree. In 1964, he was added to the faculty as assistant coach, which he served for three years. In 1967, he was hired as coach for the West Texas basketball team. This team went to the N.I.T.
He retired from coaching and moved to Monticello five years ago.
He worked with his brother, Ron, in Monon.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Monon.
He is survived by a son, Don of Cassopolis, Mich.; a brother, Ron "Bud" of Monon; four nieces; three nephews; and two grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday (today) at Bartholomew Funeral Home, Valparaiso, with Rev. Gene Tanner officiating.
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso.
Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.
