Mary 'Peggy' Nicholson
Mary "Peggy" Townsley Nicholson, 81, West Lafayette, a former Chalmers resident, died Friday, April 27, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
She was born Nov. 23, 1919, to Earl and Rheta Blanche Ellis Townsley in Lafayette. She was married Aug. 9, 1941, to Truman Nicholson in Chalmers. and he survives.
She graduated in 1938 from Chalmers High School.
She returned to school when she was 40 years old and received her bachelor of science degree from Ball State Teachers College in 1960. She received her master's degree from Indiana University in 1965.
She worked as a first grade teacher for 22 years in the Delphi Community School Corp. and retired in 1982.
She was a membr of Chalmers Community Church, where she was a member of the choir and WCF.
She was past president of Kappa Kappa Sigma (Chalmers) Sorority, Beta Chapter.
She was also a member of Arackne and Edgewood Club, Lafayette.
Her hobby was scherenschnitte (paper cutting). She taught a class on scherenschnitte at Westminster Village, West Lafayette, where she resided after moving from Chalmers.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Darlene Lenz of Cedar Lake; a sister, Julia Marie Vanderkok, West Lafayette; and two grandchildren, Wayne and Julia Jackman. A brother, John Wesley Townsley is deceased.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Revs Bill Henderson and Gerald Stevens officiating.
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Chalmers Community Church Elevator Fund.
