Catherine Nelson, 95, formerly of  407 Ferry St., Lafayette, died Monday, Feb. 7, at 10:30 p.m. in Murdock Manor, where she had been a resident, since May 1992.

She was born Dec. 26, to Joseph S. and Nellie May Shigley Nelson, in Prairie Township in White County.

She graduated in 1916, from the former Brookston Academy and in 1934, from the University of Illinois. In 1937, she earned a library science degree and in 1934 was named to Phi Beta Kappa.

From 1937-40 she was a librarian at Butler University, Indianapolis, and from 1940 until 1966, she was a librarian at Ohio University at Athens, Ohio. In 1981, she moved to Crawfordsville and in Sept. 1989, to Lafayette.

She was a member of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, Crawfordsville, and attended the Central Presbyterian Church, Lafayette. She was a former member of Lafayette YWCA and member of the American Library Association, the American Association of University Women and Tippecanoe Co. Historical Association.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs Hubert (Josephine) Young, Lafayette and several nieces and nephews.  Three sisters and two brothers are deceased.

The funeral will be conducted Friday, at 2 p.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Wallace I. McDonald officiating.  Friends may call from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in IOOF Brookston Cemetery.
