Leonard Ivan Matthews, 83, 704 S. Wood St., Brookston, died Saturday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. in the Heritage Healthcare Center, West Lafayette. He had been in failing health, the past two years.
He had lived for one month at the Heritage Healthcare Center, prior to living at the Otterbein Healthcare Center.
He was born Jan. 14, 1914, to Frank and Myrtle L. Mason Matthew, in Clifton, Ill. He was married Feb. 21, 1941, to Leota K. Thomas, in Chalmers. She died June 8, 1991.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater as a cook with the 225th Field Artillery Battalion, during World War II.
He retired in Jan. 1976, from farming.
Survivors include three daughters: Mrs Warren (Marcia) Bailey, Lafayette; Mrs Larry (Linda) Wood and Mrs Louis (Janet) Capper, both of Brookston; three brothers, Cecil, Burnettsville; Vaughn, Mission, Texas and Virgil, Monticello; a sister, Vaynetta Holeman, Monticello; and eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Burial will be at the Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
