Dr. Richard E. Matteson, 78, Brookston, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at his residence.
He was born April 8, 1922, in Hamilton, Ohio the son of Roy E. and Elaine A. Kohler Matteson. He married Virginia Campbell on September 1, 1985 in Detroit. She survives.
He was a 1939 graduate of Central High School in Detroit and received his bachelor's degree in 1949 from Michigan State.
He owned and operated Prairie Veterinary Service in Brookston since 1953. The practice closed in September 1999.
He was a World War II veteran who served in the U. S. Army as a Forward Observer, Field Artillery, and Battery Commanding Officer in Luzon, Philippines, with the 32nd lnfanty Division. He served in the Korean Conflict as a Battery Commander with AAA Bn.
Surviving with his wife are four daughters, Mary Gretchen (James) Brown of Texas, Ann Inaga (Charles) Spencer of Colville, Wash., Jean Kirstan (Richard) Bliss of Boise, Idaho and Nan Elga Matteson of Cincinnati; a son, Craig Emerson (Micki) Matteson of Naperville, Ill; a son-in-law, Victor Xavier de Quinteros of LaPaz, Bolivia; three step granddaughters, Pat Campbell of Cupertino, Calif., Sue Campbell of San Jose, Calif. And Robin Campbell of Lansing, Mich.; a step son, Michael (Patty) Campbell of Denver, Colo.; one step granddaughter; and 14 grandchildren.
A daugbter, Aylo Heike de Quinteros, died in 1992.
His funeral was Tuesday at Brookston Federated Church with Rev. Dr. Stuart Robertson officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
Burial was at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brookston.
