Francis H. 'Hack' Gillespie

Francis H. "Hack" Gillespie, 88, Monticello, died Sunday, April 4, in Monticello Healthcare Center. He had been in declining health for several months and seriously ill the last six months.

He was born Oct. 3, 1904, to Harley and Frances Stalker Gillespie, near Scottsburg. He was married Jan. 4, 1929, to Alma L. Pollock in Wolcott. She survives.

He graduated from Wolcott High School in 1923, and received a bachelor's degree from Depauw University in 1927 and his master's degree in 1932, from Purdue.

In 1927, he began his teaching career at Brookston High School. He was a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent at Monticello High School from 1931 until 1947. He served as Monticello School Superintendent from 1947 until he retired in 1969.

He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church and former member of the Masonic Lodge at Monticello.  He was a charter member of the Monticello Kiwanis Club and a pst state lieutenant governor of Kiwanis.

He served as a member of the Three Rivers Boy Scout Council, Monticello-Union Township Public Library Board, White Co. United Way Board and chairman of the White Co. Red Cross during the tornado of April 1974 recovery period.

He was honored with the George Armstrong Spencer award in 1988, by the Greater Monticello Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving with his wife are two sons; Everett N., Monticello and Edwin L., Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs Jack (Eileen L.) Washburn, Rochester; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Three brothers and two sisters are deceased.

The funeral was Wednesday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, the Rev. Michael Brown officiating.

Burial was in IOOF Riverview Cemetery.
