Harold Charles "Chuck" Garth, 68, of Brookston, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at his residence. He had been ill since 2000.
He was born on May 16, 1936 to Harold and Dorothy Woods Garth at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
He married Peggy Curts on July 12, 1959 at Chapel on the Thames, New London, Conn. She survives[.]
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1954 and finished first out of a class of 366 in the Nuclear Power School at New London, Conn. He graduated from Reactor Operator School in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and earned an engineering degree from IU-PUI at Kokomo.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1963 in both the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam as a First Class Electrician aboard nuclear submarines. He was part of the original launching commissioning and plank owner of the U.S.S.N. Snook, S5N592.
He was an electrician, electronics engineer and computer genius. He retired in 1997 from Delco Electronics in Kokomo and Reynosa, Mexico and also started Garth Manufacturing Service.
He was a member of the Delphi American Legion Post 75, was a past member of the Buck Creek F&AM, the Delphi VFW and Forty & Eight in Lafayette and was a past officer of Merou Grotto in West Lafayette. He was an avid golfer and the 'best baseball coach ever'.
He lived in Village of West Lakes, Texas for 11 years.
Other survivors include sons Tim Garth of Phoenix, AZ, Toby Garth of Delphi and Chris (Laura) Garth of Buck Creek; a sister, Carolyn Ferguson of Mesa, AZ; a brother, Leon (Fran) Jagla of Seattle, WA; a step father, Henry Jagla of Mesa, AZ; mother-in-law Marjorie Curts of Americus; a brother-in-law, Bob (Donna) Curts of Delphi; granddaughters Shontell, Ashley and Chelsea Garth; grandsons, Logan and Brody Garth, and nieces Angela Jagla and Susie and Leslie Curts.
Brothers Robert and Jimmy Jagla are deceased.
There will be no visitation.
Graveside services wili be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Springvale [sic] Cemetery in Lafayette with Rev. Vernon Stingley, officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
