Hazel E. (Reed) Gardiner

Hazel E. (Reed) Gardiner, 87, of Brookston, died Saturday, November 12, 2005 at St. Anthony Healthcare in Lafayette.

She was born December 17, 1917 in LaCrosse and attended Brookston High School.

She married Gleason Gardiner on May 17, 1935 in Brookston. He died June 12, 1994.

Hazel worked for Bryan Manufacturing in Monticello from 1949 until the early 60's when she left to go to beauty school. After graducation she owned and operated Hazel's Beauty Shop for many years until retiring. She later returned to work at Duncan Electric and retired again after 10 years.

She was a past member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority in Brookston. She was also a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Post #11 Auxiliary, all in Lafayette.

Hazel loved to dance, especially ballroom and square dancing, and enjoyed her bowling leagues.

Surviving are two sons, Dale "Huck" (Mary) Gardiner of Reidsville, GA, and Gleason E. (Mary) Gardiner Jr., of Anza, CA; four daughters, Shirley Hill of Crawfordsville, Juanita (Don) Smith of Romney, Sharon (Bob) Rogers of Greenback, TN, and Dana (Glen) Scruggs of Brookston; and one sister, Dorothy M. Scruggs of West Lafayette.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.

A memorial service was held at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home in Brookston on Saturday with Rev. Dr. Leland D. McReynolds.
