Edward 'Dyke' Dykhuizen

Edward C. "Dyke" Dykhuizen, 84, Brookston, died Saturday, Jan. 11, in Home Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient for one week.

He was born Oct. 29, 1907, to George and Gertrude Goris Dykhuizen, in Lafayette. He was married March 14, 1932, to Mary McDowell, in Cincinnati, and she survives.

He graduated in 1926, from Lafayette Jefferson High School and in 1931 from Purdue, with a degree in agriculture education.

He had taught agriculture in Wolcott and Wheatfield. In 1970 he retired from Frontier High School where he had taught agriculture at Brookston and Chalmers for 33 years. He received a distinguished service award from Indiana State Teachers Association and meritorious service award from Indiana Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.

He had formerly been a member of Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library Board and had formerly served on the board of directors of Prairieland Housing in Brookston.

He was a life member of Purdue Alumni Association and was a member of Brookston Federated Church and a former elder and trustee of that church. He was a charter member and past president of Brookston Optimist Club.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs Robert (Carol) Schelling, Frankfort and Mrs Rex (Margene) Lewis, Lafayette; a brother, Kenneth, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs Anna Bylsma, Ft. Wayne and Mrs Dorothy Vellinga, Phoenix, Arizona; six grand children and three great grandchildren. Five brothers and a sister preceded in death.

The funeral was Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, the Rev. Ralph G. Smith officiating.

Entombment was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Mausoleum, West Lafayette.
