Dr. G.L. Derhammer, 84, R.5, Monticello, died Friday, Dec. 4, at his home, apparently of a heart attack.
He was born Aug. 27, 1903, at Monongahela, Penn., to George and Minnie Hamrick Derhammer. He was married June 25, 1930, in Canton, Ohio, to Gladys Welty, who survives.
They moved to Brookston in 1931 where he practiced medicine until 1972. He was graduated from Indiana University Medical School in 1930.
He was a major in the Army medical corps. He was the battalion surgeon for the 383 Engineer Battalion, and he was the depot surgeon for Amunition [sic] Depot 0875 in England for 34 months. He formerly was director of Farmer's State Bank and team doctor for Brookston and Frontier High Schools. He was a charter member of the Brookston Optimist Club and belonged to the Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello.
He received a 50-year pin for service in the Indiana Medical Society. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lafayette.
Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Nan Louise Brooks, Fort Smith, Ark.; one son, Ned Eugene, West Lafayette; two sisters, Marie Williams, Indianapolis and Bessie Jox, Valparaiso; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
One sister is deceased.
The funeral was Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Jacob H. Hoffman officiating.
Burial was in Pond Grove Cemetery, Auburn.
