Inez Clark lived out most of her 98 years in the house where she was born, August 8, 1892, on a farm just east of Brookston. She was an only child who grew up with her parents, Ralph and Mary Mason, and her grandparents, James and Sarah Mason.
Her grandfather, a Civil War veteran, purchased the farm when he retired from blacksmithing in Monticello. Her father, a schoolteacher and, later, a rural mail carrier worked the farm as well, supplementing his income by building excellent violins.
Inez attended the Brookston Academy, class of 1911, and married Otto Clark, June 25, 1913. Otto, who also attended the Brookston school, was an inventor and engineer as well as an artist. He could well have been a painter, had he not been allergic to oil paints and turpentine. Some local residents remember the landscapes he painted for the lobby of a short-lived Brookston movie theater. Inez and Otto lived in Chicago, Evansville and South Bend, except for a period during the depths of the Depression when they returned to Brookston. Inez returned to the farm in 1939, after Otto's untimely death at age 48.
She also returned to the farm for the birth of a son, Hubert, on July 29, 1915. Hubert went on to become an engineer and inventor like his father. When Hubert died in 1971, be had over 100 patents to his credit, mostly in hydraulics.
Inez lived on the farm with her mother until 1963, when her mother died at age 90. She lived there alone until 1972, when her grandson and his wife, Howard and Kathryn Clark, returned to the farm to begin Twinrocker Handmade Paper.
Inez received her 75 year pin from Crystal Chapter 165 of the Eastern Star in 1984. She was an active member in the Prairie Home Demonstration Club, the Garden Club, and the Art Club.
She is survived by her daughter- in-law, Mrs Harriet Yapp of West Bloomfield, Michigan, her granddaughter, Hyla Clark, of New York City and her grandson, Howard, of Brookston.
A son, Hubert M. Clark preceded her in death, Nov. 18,1971.
Services were Sunday, Sept. 16, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev Libbie Stoddard officiating.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
