John A. "Jack" Briney, 81 of 607 Orchard Lane, Monticello, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at his residence.
He was born in Carroll County on March 3, 1920, to Alfred "Gus" and Isabell Roach Briney. He married Mary Jane Stults in Logansport on December 27, 1942. She survives.
He had lived in the Monticello community most of his life. He was a 1938 graduate of Monticello High School.
He owned and operated Briney's IGA Grocery Store in Monticello for more than 30 years.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club and Tippecanoe Country Club, all of Monticello and John Purdue Club. He also was a former member of the Twin Lakes School Board.
He was an avid sports fan and a strong supporter of Purdue University Sports.
He and his wife spent many winters in Fort Myers Beach, FL.
Other survivors include sons, John (Mary) Briney of Monon and Jerry (Candace) Briney of Peoria, Ariz. Also sisters, Kathryn Gates and Margaret Ellis, both of Frankfort, and Mary Jane Bergsma and Eileen Briney, both of Lafayette; a brother, Bob (Phyllis) Briney of Logansport; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with Rev. James Goodrum officiating.
Burial was at Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
