Lawrence Altman

Lawrence Airman, 80, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at his Chalmers home.

He was born Aug. 30, 1919 in Reynolds to Joseph and Edith Godenrath Altman. He married Opal Irene Wann in Reynolds on Oct. 29, 1949. She died Feb. 5, 1996.

He was a 1938 graduate of Reynolds High School.

He served in World War II with the U.S. Army from March 1942 to November 1945. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received five battle stars from the European Theater. He was a TEC 4 with Company C, 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion.

He had farmed since 1954.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reynolds, and was also a member of the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau Co-op and Chalmers American Legion Post 268.

He is survived by sons, Mark (Sandy) Altman of Marshall, Minn., and Donald Altman of Chalmers; daughter, Anne (Richard) Bales of Lafayette, brother, Paul  Altman of North Judson; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Two brothers and a sister are deceased.

A funeral mass was celebrated Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reynolds, with the Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home was in charge.

Burial with military graveside rites by Chalmers American Legion Post 268 was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Reynolds.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Opal Wann Altman Scholarship Fund.
