Matilda Bruss Allen

Matilda Bruss Allen, 92, formerly of Brookston, died Saturday evening, April 2, in Home Hospital, Lafayette, where she had been a patient for two weeks.

She was born in Brookston to Edward Clay and Matilda Caroline Wolf Bruss on February 27, 1902. She married Cleo R. Allen on June 30, 1925 in Brookston. He died in 1961.

She graduated from Brookston High School and Madam Blaker's Teachers College, Indianapolis.

She was the first married teacher at the Brookston school where she taught the first gnde for five years. She also was permitted to wear lipstick. Her husband owned Allen Motor Sales (a Chevrolet dealership) for 36 years.

She lived in the house where she was born for 91 years.

She was a charter member of the Brookston Federated Church, member and first pledge of the Chi Chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Brookston Mothers Club and Brookston American Legion Auxiliary No. 251.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. John (Norma) Ward, Rt. 2, Brookston, and one son, Carter Allen of Tucson, AZ; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were today at 10 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, the Rev. Stuart Robertson officiated.

Burial was in lOOF Brookston Cemetery.
