Pokagon

17OCT97

Pokagon seems to have a little of everything:  woods, trails, lakes, a nature center, and a fine inn.  My first visit
to Pokagon was wonderful, and I certainly hope to visit again.  The trails are a great for an easy hike.  Even though the inn was full, only a moderate number of hikers were out when I visited.

You'll see a nice mix of woods and wetlands as well as lake shore.  Be sure and stop by Lake Lonidaw via Trail 3 for a peaceful and pleasant view.

The inn itself is almost a mini-resort; it has a conference center, restaurant, cafe, indoor pool, sauna, fire pit, and even a library.  I was pleased to find the inn staff were very friendly-wishing me a nice day whether
at the front desk or just passing me in the hallways.  With a view of Lake James just outside what more could you ask for?  Get your reservations in early though.  I called in May and had trouble finding two rooms for a Thursday
and Friday in October.

Although it wasn't open in October, the toboggan slide looked like a good reason to visit Pokagon in the winter.  Ice skating and other winter activities are also available.

Pokagon seems to offer something for everyone.  Maybe that's the reason the inn is so busy.  Nonetheless, the casual hiker or vacationer can still have some privacy with nature--just don't expect it 100% of  the time.
