Loblolly Marsh and Wetland Preserve

Location: From I-69 and IN 18, take 18 east through the village of Fiat, continuing to CR 250. Turn left and continue until you come to a blacktop parking area on the left; park here.

Description: Your first view is of what appears to be a large, shallow pond in an abandoned farm field.  Take the trail across the road back toward the trees and you'll find a classic marsh wetland that's worth examining.  There's also two other paths at this point, one going through the drier part of the woods and another going around to the other side, away from the marsh.  There appears to have been a good deal of work put into this, although the parts nearest the road are still pretty much in the abandoned field state already mentioned.  There's a blacktopped trail from the parking lot that I didn't explore, but it's nice to see consideration given for handicapped access.  A sign-in box with a pamphlet explaining what has been and is being done would be a nice touch.  This is in Limberlost country, the home of Gene Stratton Porter, who wrote some well-regarded books about the area during the early part of the previous century.  One of her homes is preserved in nearby Geneva and worth a visit while you're in the area.

Nearby Points of Interest: Oubache State Park

Cautions: I would assume mosquitoes are present; I was there on a hot, windy day and noticed none.  Stay on the trail, especially around the wetlands; otherwise, you'll sink.
