Concierge

Rent a car (I prefer a 4x4).

Make a list of the things you want to do day-by-day. Don't go home saying "I ran out of time". Las Vegas is open 24 hours per day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. You do not sleep in Las Vegas, you sleep at home!

All Las Vegas Hotels have toll free 800 telephone numbers. You can get the 800 telephone number for free by calling the 800 information operator at 1-800-555-1212. You can receive a free e-mail of all the toll free telephone numbers by submitting your e-mail address on the internet at: http://www.aglitter.com/tollent.asp Most of your questions can be answered by a simple, toll free telephone call. Pose your question to the Hotel telephone operator who answers and she will connect you to the right department. If you are not satisfied, call them back, it's their dime and you will get different answers and rates from different people. Try Park Place Entertainment or MGM-Mirage . Look around web sites. You can find 2 or 3 different rate tables.

Gambling

  • Divide your gambling budget by the number of days of your stay.
    • Place the daily gambling budget in a separate envelope for each day.
For example: If you are staying 5 days and have $600 put aside for gambling. Mark 5 envelopes, 1 for each day of your stay. Put $120 in each envelope. Once your gambling budget for the day is spent, find something else to do. Do not touch another days envelope.
Your own GREED is your own worst enemy.

Do not play: The odds against you are huge!

  • Keno
  • the big six wheel
  • Bingo
  • Slots
  • Proposition sports bets
  • The center bets in craps
  • A double zero roulette wheel
  • live poke

Do play: You do have a chance.

  • blackjack
  • craps (pass line and odds)
  • sports wagering
  • video poker

Learn to gamble at home where it does not cost you anything. Then start in the casinos with small minimum tables or slot machines. Play more downtown (Plaza, Lady Luck etc.) and definitely more at "locals" casinos (Gold Coast, Orleans etc.) There are many internet sites where you can play at home for free. or chek out Bob Dancer's WinPoker .

Join ALL the slot clubs, even if you do not play in that casino. You will get more promotions mailed to your home than by just joining slot clubs.

Did I mention, drink water.

Tipping

Tip in places where you have never tipped before. In Las Vegas tipping is BEFORE the service . Here are some examples:

  • When the sign says "Valet Parking is Full" then $5 will find a space quickly.
  • When checking in
    • Place $20 on your Hotel registration desk counter, and ask for a an upgrade. If you are told they meet your request, pocket your $20.
    • Ask for a room with a view mountains or The Strip.
  • Place $10 on the registration desk counter, when renting a car, and ask for a free upgrade.
  • Slip $20 to the big, burly guy guarding the "velvet rope" at the entry to the nightclub of your choice, which now has a line a mile long to get in.

Did I mention, drink water.

Comps

There are three secrets for getting comps in Las Vegas: Ask, Ask and Ask. Millions of dollars are given away by the casinos every year. Make sure you get your share. ASK

Get to know pit bosses, casino hosts and slot hosts. They love giving out their business card. Ask them for one. Call them before leaving to Las Vegas. They can fulfill impossible demands. Their comps usually do not entail any loss of slot club points. Some hosts are scared to give their own mother a free buffet. GET ANOTHER ONE. Or change casinos.

Transportation

We like to rent an SUV. We take day trips and side trips. We travel the "back country byway"s. A high clearance vehicle or 4x4 is a must. Look at a map and learn the following streets; Koval, Paradise/Main, Indistrial, Freemont Street/Boulder Highway, Charelston and the interstates.

Every car rental agency in every state in the US is required to provide liability with every rental. So we're only talking about damage to the actual rental car itself, not damage you may accidentally inflict on anyone else. Check with your insurance company for collision coverage while you are driving a rental car..

First timers; CAT has various passes.
