Charlie Alm - Dulcimer
Builder - handcrafted Hammered and mountain
dulcimers. Charlie Alm (my dad) has been building instruments for just
over 30 years. In that time he has built over 100 hammered dulcimers and
over 400 mountain or lap dulcimers. He uses native american hardwoods -
mostly walnut and cherry. His mountain dulcimers have Grover brand
tuning machines, which make an easy-to-tune instrument and look great. He
and his instruments are pretty well know
throughout the midwest and in dulcimer players and builder circles. He has
written the
best book on hammered dulcimer construction, called "Hammer Dulcimers -
How I Build the Things," now in its 13th printing with over 5000 copies
sold worldwide.
Harlan Hubbard - Hubard lived outside our industrialized society. He and his wife lived simply on what they grew themselves in a small house by the river he loved. Harlan died in 1984 but left us a lifetime of watercolors and oil paintings, woodcuts and sketches of his life, and life on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. We are fortunate to ave a good selection of watercolors and woodcuts by Hubbard available. Louie Laskowski - Laskowski works mostly in paint and various printing processes. She is best know for her "Pink House" series which depict her struggles as a teenage girl with an abusive father, and "The Dresses" series which talk about women's lives. Dale Plummer - Plummer is a retired school teacher who has been making eccentric little porcelain characters for 45 years. Nobody else does anything like this! My favorites are his little demonic looking angels and his autobiographical scenes. His Noah's Arks are pretty amazing - you get the basic ark, and then every year there is another pair of strange tiny animals you can buy. In the years since the originals he has added giraffes, monkees, and musk ox. You will want to collect the whole set! Ionel Talpazan - Talpazan was born in Romania and emigrated to the US ten years ago. He had a UFO experience as a young child, and has been obsessed with it ever since. He oaints and draws depictions of UFO's, with particular attention to their propulsion systems. Talpazan was first brought to public attention when Jay Tobler discovered him selling his work on the sidewalk by Central Park, and wrote an article on him for Folk Messenger. Eva Johnson - Johnson is a self-taught painter who is nearly 102 years old. She has been painting her flower arrangements, pictures of woods and animals, and rural scenes for nearly 40 years. Ann Nathan bought some of her painted saw blades to sell in New York, and Hoagy Charmichael and Chris Schenkel have both bought paintings of hers. Dale Titus Hand-Woven Rag Rugs - Titus is a weaver of rag rugs. Before him, his mother, Iva Titus, wove rugs for many years to support the family. She passed away two years ago at age 92, and now Dale carries on the family tradition. The Titus rugs are amazing for their quality and beautiful color combinations. The rugs are all double string and beaten very tightly. Painter Robert Natkin always stops to buy Titus rag rugs when he is in town, as they remind him of his own palette in his pastel work. The rugs we have here are the last of the ones made by Iva Titus. There are beautiful solids with their subtle changes, and pastels with many hues. They will last for many years and may be washed in a regular washing machine. Charlie Fausset - Fausset is a retired history teacher. He builds whirley gigs. Birds and airplanes mostly, although you will find him at his shop working on the odd wood chopper or sawyer whirley gig. I really like his whirley gigs and have enjoyed seeing them evolve over the 20 plus years I have known him. I collect them and have them in the livingroom and on the inside porch, but I also fly them and always have at least three out back going in the wind. Right now it's a monoplane, a duck and a bluebird. Charlie also makes nice stands so you can display them indoors. |
