The idea first hit me last year. My wife is a high school art
teacher. There was a competitive art show for the students from a nine
county area. I always give a $25 check to be awarded by the judges to one
of the kids. I drove to where the show was to meet my
wife and go to dinner. I was in the company van which has the store name
on it. As I pulled up, a car which had been leaving the
lot backed up and parked. A young woman got out of the car and ran up to
me and and said, "You're the person who gave me the prize!"
She was beaming. I was invited in to see the piece which had been chosen
to
receive my award. I was introduced to her mom, dad, brothers and sisters,
and boyfriend. From the enthusiasm in this young artist's face, I knew my
company name would be mentioned again and again. I thought, "This is a
pretty good deal - I get some really good word-of-mouth, and this young
person gets rewarded for doing good work!" I was feeling pretty good about
the whole thing.
Then I noticed my company name on a little sign by the painting
saying, "Dave's Computer World Merit Award". Everyone to view the show
for the next month would see my name. My company was also
acknowledged on the program. The next morning, the student was recognized
as the "recipient of the Dave's Computer World Merit Award" in the
newspaper which is read by thousands of people. In the week
following the event, I received a letter of thanks
from the event's sponsor. It was also written up in the high
school newspaper. My $25 had gone a long way!
Add this information to the fact that the art shows in the Greater
Lafayette area do not have
very much in the way of prizes, and you get an opportunity to get
something good going here. I decided to see if I could make it easy for others to benefit from "art advertising" and make it as simple as possible. Doing some serious advertising and doing something good for the community -- what could be better?
