SPEED DEMONS - LOOK OUT! - We knew they were coming, and now they're here -- the hot new Pentium III 866EB processor chips from INTEL. These are not for everybody, but for people with serious graphics programs like Photoshop and Pagemaker, as well as dedicated game enthusiasts, this is the machine to die for. With the cache that is refreshed every clock cycle (instead of every other one) and the 133mhz bus speed (instead of the usual 100mhz), this puppy sings opera! It's time to show the other kids what you're made of. Sure, they may still kick sand on you, but they'll know your new computer is the best there is. Have Dave's build your new computer today!

TECH CAM The dream becomes a reality! Yes, you can click on the Tech Cam and see what's going on in the Dave's Computer World shop any time day or night. Are the technicians busy? Is your spouse in the shop visiting when she or he said they'd be at the grocery? Fret no more -- watch TechCam!

Y2K WAS A JOKE... - It came and went and we're all still here. So now might be a good time to get down to the serious stuff of getting yourself the cool new computer stuff you need and deserve. Here are a few ideas to help get you thinking: a NEW COMPUTER (a Pentium III, of course), a DVD CD Drive, a Re-writable CD Drive, a 56K Modem or Subscription to ADSL Service, Doom III (Oh, no! Not another DOOM!!!), a Fast Color Deskjet Printer, a Color Laser Jet, A Years Subscription to the Internet, a nice Laptop Computer, a Sony Digital Cameras, an excellent Microtek Scanners, A NICE RAM Upgrade, and the list goes on...

DCWI DOUBLES DIALUPS!!! - Early this year DCWI doubled the the number of modems it has. This makes getting on a breeze, even during peak times. For some reason peoples' usage of the internet had increased quite a bit over the previous three months. Our modems have had a lot more calls, even though our subscriber base has not increased significantly. In order to provide the best possible service we have doubled the dial-ups. We hope you enjoy the improvement! (Of course this will mean that Dave has to carry peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from home for lunch from here on out...)

LIKE MORE SPEED?? - You can access the internet 10 to 53 times faster and be on 24 hours a day for about $2 a day or less. You can have multiple computers hooked up and all be online at the same time. (Note: ADSL is available to Lafayette, West Lafayette and Purdue customers only.) Call the store at 563-3504 for details.

IBM CALLS IT QUITS ON HOME COMPUTERS! - IBM has announced they will no longer make home computers, re-focusing their effort on the business market. Goodbye at last to the Aptiva and all those (in our humble opinion) awful nonstandard boxes from Big Blue.

NEW MS OUTLOOK E-MAIL VIRUS - The "Bubble Boy" virus can damage files even if the e-mail it is attached to is not opened! It is named after a character in Seinfeld. VBS/Bubbleboy is transmitted through an email message with the subject heading "Bubbleboy is back!" It will ONLY infect PCs running Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook or Outlook Express. You can protect yourself by turning the security settings to their maximum level. For more info, visit the McAfee AntiVirus site. We have the latest McAfee on the shelf at the store.

MICROSOFT IS A MONOPOLY proclaims judge. Duhh! It's been a long time coming, with all the repeated shenanagins Microsoft has pulled over the years, with IBM, Intel, Apple, and especially Netscape. Microsoft does many things well (I don't see boxes of UNIX jumping off the shelf), BUT Microsoft should be governed by the same rules as other businesses. Gee, maybe Justice is not blind after all...

PACKARD BELL FINALLY DEAD. Packard Bell was long thought by many to epitomize the worst in non-standard, throw-away computers. They are not the only ones who build a computer this bad way, but were one of the worst. We learned early on how bad they were when, after having sold about thirty Packard Bells to a school corporation, five of them computers had their power supplies fail in then first six months. None of the odball little power supplies were available from Packard Bell (or anywhere else) to repair the dead computers. We had to buy the school five new computers to replace them. Packard Bell is DEAD -- Who can be sorry about this?

RAM PRICES FALL! Memory prices are back down and it is reasonable to buy RAM upgrades again. Memory prices had quadrupled in the last month. As we reported on the Dave & Eric radio show on WBAA today, prices are now back down. Judging by the minor fluctuations we have seen in the last 4 days we feel they have returned to stability for the time being. Whew! It is safe to go ahead with getting any RAM you had put off during the last month due to the high prices.
