NETIQUETTE TIPS Everybody had to be new to the net at least one time. There is so much new stuff to learn, it can make your head hurt. Here are some tips to help you avoid total cluelessness as you head out onto the Net for the first time. 1. Reading mail offline is the polite thing to do. 2. Don't sacrifice clarity for cuteness - clear writing is best understood. 3. Brevity is the soul of e-mail. 4. E-mail always seems ruder than it was meant to be. 5. Watch your tone of voice. Typing in all caps is considered SHOUTING. 6. MORF is a net way to ask an online friend, "Are you male or female?" 7. Courtesy is essential for effective communication. 8. For a while yet, as more and more pioneers head into cyberspace, you are likely to find telnet connections being refused because too many others are using the computers you want to use. If you are just looking, do it on off-peak hours. 9. When using the FTP please use common courtesy by not overusing a server or FTP site during business hours of that site. 10. Treat other users with respect by doing large downloads during off-peak hours. (C)1995 DCWI
