Publishing your Web Pages on Dcwi
By David Thiel
Note: Even a simple web page requires basic computer proficiency skills, "Computer Literacy" so-called. Please be familiar with your computer and a range of applications, including Netscape and WinZip, before attempting to exchange information via FTP.
Use an editor like Netscape Gold, MS Frontpage, HotDog, Composer, or just plain Windows Notepad to create your webpage. Note: Please name your home page Welcome.html. The best way to learn how to program bare bones HTML is to go to Document Source under the View menu while on a web page that you like, and see how the page is constructed. Once you are satisfied with your page...
1. Download Ws_ftp. This is the easiest program to use for uploading your pages to the server.
2. Make a folder called Ws_Ftp and move the file ws_ftp32.zip to that directory.
3. If using Pkunzip, go to the dos prompt and type cd\ws_ftp, then pkunzip ws_ftp32.zip.
4. If using WinZip, simply go to the Ws_Ftp folder and double-click on ws_ftp32. Tell the program to extract into the C:\Ws_Ftp directory.
5. Once this is done, click on the Start button, then on Run. In the blank, type "C:\Ws_ftp\Ws_ftp32.exe" and hit enter. The Ws_ftp program will execute.
6. Click on the New button and enter the following:
Profile Name: Dcwi.com
Host Name: Dcwi.com
Host type: Unix (standard)
User ID: (your username)
Password: (your password)
7. Leave the rest blank and click Save. Click Ok.
8. On the left side of the window, find and select the HTML and graphics files you want to upload.
9. On the right side of the window, double click on the .www directory.
10. Now click on the --> button to upload your pages.
11. The files you uploaded will appear in the right window. Make sure your home page is titled "Welcome.html" with a capital "W".
12. Click on Exit.
13. The address for your web page will be "http://dcwi.com/~username", where username is your login.
14. Gradually update and correct your page as you have new information and learn more about HTML. Good luck!
