If you are just looking at one web page, or reading or writing one e-mail for over ten minutes, we can suggest some strategies to help you not get disconnected. This is a somewhat common cause of this problem, however it could also be all the stuff that is between you and DCWI and/or the configuration of your machine. I will suggest some possible problem areas to look at.
Check your software modem settings to be sure they are correct, look at type of modem - is it a Hayes or USR or a poorer type. The newest modems from about the last year are pretty good, but if you live in a marginal service area you may need a better quality modem. The best manufacturers have premium modems which generally perform better.
Is the modem functioning properly? We have seen cases of people having this problem, and it was fixed by replacing the modem. With them, the modem had worked fine, then started hanging up frequently. A modem can get clobbered by a line surge, or just "wear out." Replacing a "dying" modem with a good one will rectify the problem.
If you find the problem is looking like the modem, you may wish to bring it in to the shop and have us check it out for you.
Look at the amount of RAM in the machine and the hard disk space available. You want to have at least 100 meg of hard drive free, and 32 to 64 meg of RAM. More is always better with these two items.
Look at your phone wiring in & out of your house -- are all connections good, are all wire ends clean? Check your neighborhood. Certain areas of one nearby town for instance can only get a slow connection since there is a problem with the phone company wiring when it comes to modems. I have a friend who cannot connect at all when it rains -- an underground cable someplace in the two mile run out to his house has apparently got a cut in it!
Can you take your cpu to another location and get a better connection rate? This would indicate a problem with your wiring. Most phone companies are helpful if you have questions about the wiring. However, be aware that the phone company does not guarantee that your phone line will do anything other than transmit a voice phone call. They do not guarantee a data-grade connection at voice connection rates. Many people get frequent disconnects due to their phone company's wiring.
Somebody else in your house picking up the a phone while you are on line can knock you off line. It causes excessive errors which make the modem terminate the connection. This can also be being caused by your having call waiting -- when you get the little beep that would inform you have another call coming in, it kicks the modem off the line. You phone company can tell you how to turn off call waiting while you are on the internet.
These are some ideas. Good luck!
