Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library

Brookston Prairie Township Public Library was founded in 1916 when the property taxpayers of the Town of Brookston and Prairie Township agreed to tax themselves to support th library. The land was purchased in 1915 through donations and the building was constructed in 1916 through the grant from the Carnegie Corp.
With over 20,000 books on the shelves, the library outgrew the original building. 1992 was the ground breaking of a 5,426 sq. Ft. Addition and the complete remodeling of the existing 3,669 sq. Ft. The renovated building now houses a new community room, a larger historical room, a seminar room and a teen room.

The Brookston Town Hall is the place you go to get your water and electricity turned on. The Council meets here twice a month. The Brookston town web site, courtesy of the Office of the Clerk-Treasurer, Ginger Brown, contains a variety of useful information about the town, including info which would be very helpful to new residents. Daily lunch specials. A really good bottomless cup of coffee. Smoking is allowed. This spacious corner building has been a restaurant since the 30's when the threshing crews would come and dine family style. (Formerly named Joe's Restaurant, the Corner Cafe suffered a fire in mid-March 1996, caused by a child playing with matches. Although there was major damage, we are lucky the building was not completely destroyed. It is back open for business after some major hard work and rebuilding. Located on the north end of town, Dave's IGA is a nice size grocery store. Good meat department, adequate fresh fruits and vegetables. Everything a family needs to put food on the table and keep the dog and cat happy. Sale items all the time. Unlike the giant grocery stores, you don't have to waste a lot of time and gas getting there, you don't have to park a mile away out in the parking lot, and you don't have to hike up and down ten miles of aisles just to buy a hundred dollars worth of groceries. They have large tobacco assortment, lottery tickets, and a selection of videos. The Frontier Dollars For Scholars chapter is organized to provide local students with academic support and financial aid to encourage higher levels of achievement. Citizens in our community have formed Frontier a Dollars For Scholars chapter to rally around our students, to give them a boost, and to ensure that they reach their highest potential. Local volunteers raise money to help Frontier students afford the cost of higher education. All money raised stays in the community to support our local students.
